Theatre Winter Haven and the Penguin Project

Empowering Special Needs Artists Through Collaboration and Creativity

By Amanda Swank, publisher of Macaroni KID Winter Haven - Davenport, FL February 5, 2025

Theatre has long been a space for self-expression, community building, and celebrating creativity. But for some children, particularly those with special needs, access to such experiences may be limited. That’s where the Penguin Project comes in—a groundbreaking initiative that pairs young artists with disabilities, or "Penguins," with typical peer mentors, fostering inclusivity through the performing arts. This year is Theatre Winter Haven’s third year partnering with the Penguin Project.

The Origins of the Penguin Project

The Penguin Project was founded by Dr. Andrew Morgan, a man whose professional background blends an extensive background in child psychology with a lifelong passion for theatre. Dr. Morgan was a theatre enthusiast during his youth, participating in productions throughout college. In adulthood, his two passions—psychology and theatre—merged in a unique way. He envisioned a program where children with special needs could come together to perform a fully realized musical, providing them not just with artistic opportunities, but with confidence, social connection, and a sense of belonging.

Dr. Morgan’s vision grew into the Penguin Project, which seeks to bridge the gap between children with disabilities and their typically developing peers. The "Penguins" aren’t simply the focus of the production—they’re active participants, creating a truly inclusive experience for all involved. The program pairs each artist with a typical mentor who serves as a guide and emotional support throughout the process. Mentors help with tasks ranging from assisting with mobility (like pushing wheelchairs) to offering friendship and encouragement, all while shadowing their partner on stage. This combination of creative expression and emotional support creates an environment of mutual respect and friendship, where everyone’s contributions are celebrated.

Theatre Winter Haven/Penguin Project Collaboration

This is the third year that Theatre Winter Haven is partnering with the Penguin Project. This year’s production will include 17 penguins with 17 mentors. The group meets twice a week for 90-minute rehearsals and monthly themed parties are held to foster community outside of rehearsal.

The culmination of the program’s hard work and creativity is a fully realized performance. This year, the talented cast will take the stage in Seussical Kids, a 45-minute version of the popular musical based on the whimsical stories of Dr. Seuss. The production, which will debut in April, offers a perfect platform for young artists to showcase their talents. But perhaps more importantly, the production serves as a powerful statement about inclusion and the power of the arts to bring people together.

Seussical Kids will run at Theatre Winter Haven main stage on April 18 and 19. Tickets can be purchased at the theatre or by calling 863-294-7469. You can also visit Theatre Winter Haven online at theatrewinterhaven.com.
